Jack Murtha dies | Jack Murtha dead | Jack Murtha died | Jack Murtha death bio wiki - Democratic Representative John Patrick “Jack” Murtha, Jr., one of the figures of the Democratic majority in the House, has died at the age of 77, said Monday his office in a statement.
Mr. Murtha, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran, was president of the commission to distribute funds for the Pentagon. It was one of the major opponents of the war in Iraq, even if he had voted in 2002 for the use of force against the regime of Saddam Hussein.
Murtha was elected for the first time in the House of Representatives in 1974 as a representative from Pennsylvania (east).
Died in hospital in Arlington (Virginia, is), he was hospitalized last week. The statement gave no details on the causes of his death. A source close to the election, he died from complications of surgery of the gall bladder.
President Barack Obama on Monday ordered the half-masting of flags of the White House.
In a statement, Obama said he was “saddened” by the death of an elected Democrat. Mr. Murtha to Congress became a “respected voice on national security issues.
In the 1980s, he worked for example with the representative Charlie Wilson, to release funds for the CIA to help the Afghan fighters against the Soviets.
“Today, with the dead (John) Jack Murtha, we lost a great patriot,” wrote the chairman of the House Nancy Pelosi, saluting the “courage” Mr. Murtha for his positions on the war in Iraq.
Pelosi, John Murtha was that close, praised his work for the fight against breast and prostate cancer, diabetes and AIDS.
